Dry but chilly north & east

Issued: 0530hrs Monday 8th January 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Warm sunshine Greece and southern Italy

Monday
High pressure centred around southern Scandinavia produces a cold easterly wind across central Europe. Temperatures around freezing in northern Germany and Poland, but generally dry. A lot of cloud across central regions of Europe as a warm front extends west to east. Patchy snow for the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Dry for areas near the Black Sea. Some snow for northern Norway and Sweden, but much of Scandinavia will be dry. Sub-zero in Finland.
Low pressure over the western Mediterranean brings thundery rain to the Balearics and southern France. Snow for the French-Italian Alps, accompanied by strong winds across much of Italy. Heavy bursts of rain skirt across southern Spain, whilst much of Iberia should escape dry. Highs 10 to 15C around the Costas, but cooler inland. Dry and warm with southerly winds for the central-eastern Med, plus Greece and the Balkans, highs 14 to 18C.

Tuesday
Fronts move in from the Atlantic into Portugal, bringing heavy rain, which encroaches into western Spain later. Staying dry for central and eastern Spain, and fairly warm in the east. Areas of heavy and thundery rain affect southern France and northern Italy. Some snow for the southern Alps. High pressure centred across eastern Europe and Scandinavia brings plenty of dry weather from Greece to the Baltic. Rather cloudy around the Black Sea with a risk of drizzly rain into Romania and Bulgaria. Strong south-easterly winds for Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland, also southern Scandinavia. Generally dry with variable cloud for northern France, the Low Countries and Germany. Hard frost in central Norway and Sweden. A few snow flurries in the far north.
